2 Tone was the first music scene I got into. Loved it at the time, the music, clothes and the message that the bands were putting across (which seemed to be lost on a few fans). Even got to support The Selecter at the much missed Dexys club in Sunderland when I was with the G Men. But this was in the mid 90s and only Pauline Black & Gaps remained from the original line up. Still, they did have The Specials drummer John Bradbury with them that night.
However, I went to see The Specials the other month in Newcastle and can honestly say that I didn't enjoy the gig. It was like watching a Cabaret act, and a rusty one at that. I could of wrote down the bands inbetween song banter before the gig. Even if it had been the full line up with Jerry Dammers I doubt very much that I'd of enjoyed it anymore. Shame as The Specials once meant so much to me. I just guess that my music tastes have moved on since 1979.
These days I'd much rather go to a club and hear stuff I haven't heard before. After all I could sit at home with the best of 2 Tone CD (one of those shiny beer mats Paddy) on if I wanted to listen to 2 Tone. But I'd rather be at a club enjoying 60s ska, rocksteady, reggae on 45 and broadening my musical tastes.
Saying that, when I dj I do have a few 2 Tone records in my box and by a few I mean 5 or 6 singles. Which I'll spin if requested but I wouldn't play by choice myself.

when i was at school two tone and the jam were the favourite bands of us all, and evryone thought they were a mod including me, as i got older and found out about the real skinhead culture and music, i was no longer the young mod, i grew into a skinhead, i hear the two tone now and as i have said before it reminds me of the youth club or school discos, so yes i have tired of hearing it, but it doesnt make it bad, but compared to the originals from jamaica doesnt come close, so when i come to dos like pressure drop its great to hear the real ska rocksteady and reggae, and to me a little nostalgia with two tone. can you play more derrick morgan tho please, for me he is the real deal ;D
